Brian McKechnie is the charming fella behind the popular podcast/vidcast CommandN, hosted by geek goddess Amber MacArthur. Also an Associate Web Producer for Citytv and a talented filmmaker, Brian is all about smart, funky content. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he's both himself. GI: Content-creating with new media in the 21st C - adventure of a lifetime or minefield from hell? BM: I started producing video for the web back in 1999 and it was a nightmare. Large files, low quality, and big hosting bills to boot. Things have changed dramatically since then and the Internet is now the best source of on-demand video. We are still in the infancy of online video, blogging, and social networking though and I can't wait to see what the next big innovation is. BM: When I was about 8-years-old I took apart the Commodore16 my mother bought me for my birthday. I removed all the memory before I realized nothing was labeled. I had to figure out how to put it back together on my own. I did, it worked, and I instantly became a geek. BM: Knowledge is the most powerful tool we have. It's endless, accessible, and you can't buy it, download it, or steal it. In my world the more knowledge you have the more respect, power, and money you have. BM: Since my wife doesn't work in tech I'm going to have to say Amber MacArthur. She's beautiful, smart, and one of my best friends. She's also one of the hardest working tech journalists I've ever met. BM: I could never decide between the two so I settled on "boxer briefs". BM: An iPhone. I want to be touched by everyone. BM: In a few years when my kid is older we're going to take him to Africa or Egypt for summer vacation. I've always wanted to go and I think this would be a great learning experience for him. BM: A Canadian geek is always complaining that we don't have the latest, greatest technology. No iPhone, no HD movies on XBOX Live, no fiber Internet, no movies or tv shows in iTunes, etc. BM: At home in my living room. It's relaxing and I have everything I need to unwind and connect to the outside world. BM: Music always helps bring out my creativity. Beck, The White Stripes, Radiohead, and Johnny Cash are always on my iPod. BM: Coffee. Peet's or Starbucks. BM: Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are both big inspirations to me. Love them or hate them they changed the world and are still changing it. BM: Because Paris Hilton just doesn't do it for me. Brains and personality stimulate me a lot more then physical appearances.
