TechTV alumn Jessica Corbin embodies new media chic. Her rich resume encompasses everything from celebrity television host, to high-tech entrepreneur, to CNN panelist, to fitness guru. She's worked for the best in the business, including CNET and Revision3, and her latest endeavour, Fempire, bills itself as the "online girls' locker room".
Part social network, part multimedia mag, Fempire is mother-confessor, mentor, BFF, and omni-feminine Id wrapped in one slick package. Its unapologetic bravura, deep thoughts and sexy smarts can't help but engage the senses. Not unlike it's founder.
GI: Do women experience technology differently to men? How so?
JC: That is a difficult question. But to make a rash generalization, I do think men and women see the world differently. Men see things in layers, while women see things in webs. Due to this belief, I think men and women experience the world differently. Not better, not worse, but in a complimentary fashion. So to answer your question directly... yes, I think women experience technology differently. GI: What's your greatest success story in the narrative of Fempire so far? JC: The fact that we are still going and growing without any formal backing. This is a bootstrapped endeavor. It survives due to our belief in the project to provide independent, free thinking women a platform to relate to. I still believe that we haven't even hit our stride yet with the project... there is still so many things to fix. But we are patient and committed to grow a content base and an audience that is authentic and genuine. GI: Can you tell us a bit about your 'offline' self - favourite tactics to unwind, a space or state of mind you connect to your best thinking? JC: I have crazy energy and find my outlet in aggressive sports. I love boxing/kickboxing, road biking, running. Yoga is a staple to ground me. There isn't a place I go to get my ideas.. but they usually bubble up when I am inspired or completely broken. GI: What is your first memory of experiencing technology? The Internet? JC: My ghetto apple desktop employing the hunt and peck method to typing a 6th grade english paper. GI: Is knowledge power in your world, and if so, why? JC: Truth is power in my world. Sometimes that comes in the form of head knowledge, but sometimes it comes in the form of a deeper knowing... another intelligence like emotional, social, spiritual. I know it sounds like woo woo talk, but that is the way I feel. GI: Who's the sexiest person in tech? JC: I am going to say Jay Adelson... probably because he is not only brilliant but he employes me and it is important that I stay on his good side ;-) I am also a big fan of Beckey Worley, Greg Brannan, Mark Larkin, David Prager, Kevin Rose, Sarah Lane, Patrick Norton, etc. JC: I had the privilege of working at TechTV for 4 years. And so far, that has been a very inspiring innovative bunch that has continued to stick together and innovate even though Comcast came in and tore the house down. GI: Why is smart sexy? JC: Because being smart give you a sense of confidence... and confidence is what is truly sexy. GI: If you were a gadget, which one would you be and why? JC: Blackberry Pearl... ummm, just look at the special bean like features and you can figure it out...Also written by Annie Geek-o-vitz
